International sport in Killarney will be played for the first time when Australia meet New Zealand in polocrosse at Killarney on May 17-19. The Australian team will play New Zealand at 3.30pm Friday, May 17 and then again on Saturday and Sunday as part of the Gold Coast carnival.

For the past decade, the Gold Coast club has hosted its carnivals at Killarney after it lost its Gold Coast grounds in the run up to the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Long-time Killarney Polocrosse Club official Col Bloomfield said there had been under-21 Tests in polocrosse at Killarney in the past but this weekend’s series would be the first for the sport.

He has been a member for 65 years and a long-time office-bearer of the Polocrosse Club and the Inaugural Secretary of the Recreation Club and said he believed this weekend’s games would be the first open international competition in any sport at Killarney. The Australian team for this year’s World Cup in South Africa will use the series as part of their cup preparation. The team head coach is Kent Wells from the Warwick club with Jane Marriott coach of the four women and Will Weston coach of the four men. The Killarney club is expected to field three teams in the weekend carnival.
